Brueggeman, Walter. The Land: Place as Gift, Promise, Challenge in Biblical Faith. Kingston, Ontario, Canada: Augsburg Fortress Publishers, 1977 / 2002

Recommended By: Queen’s Theological College
To Acquire Contact: Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Super Book Deals
Notes: Using the stories of Genesis, the Wilderness period, Deuteronomy, the monarchy, the prophetic literature and the Exile, the restoration period (Ezra and Nehemiah), and the New Testament, Brueggemann raises the irksome problem of the relation between land as literal referent and as symbol. He insists that neither must be allowed interpretative predominance and that land cannot be reduced to mere "physical dirt" nor to spiritualized metaphor. He explores the ambiguity of land--the need for people to have a place to put down roots, but also the idolatry that comes when the land is regarded as the ultimate (rather than penultimate) source of life.
