Smithers, John. Interpreting Family Farm Change and the Agricultural Importance of Rural Communities in Ontario, Canada. Guelph, Ontario, Canada: University of Guelph, July 2003
To Acquire Contact: Abstract. Email: jsmither@uoguelph.caNotes: Conference paper given to 5th British-American-Canadian Conference on Rural Geography, July 2003, University of Exeter, England. The paper explores the ways in which farmers look to the local rural community for support of various kinds. Community linkages are examined around three dominant themes: participation in organizations, purchasing, and perceptions and experiences of community support for farming. The findings confirm the interactive importance of business and household considerations in understanding farm change, and suggest a tendency for disengagement between farms pursuing aggressive expansion and local community organizations and businesses. Jobs and a variety of farm household considerations make for key linkage points between the two sectors, with the importance of these mediated by farm business development trajectories and the family life course.
